Smoking and vaping rules can vary depending on the state, local laws, Customer, and specific work location where your task is being completed.
When working a Hyer task, you are responsible for following the smoking and vaping policies of the Customer and the location where you are working.
Can I Smoke or Vape Indoors While Working a Task?
No. Do not smoke, vape, or use electronic smoking devices inside a Customer's building while working a Hyer task.
This includes products such as:
- Cigarettes
- E-cigarettes
- Vapes and vapor products
- Other electronic smoking devices
Smoking and vaping laws vary by state and location. Some states and local governments have additional restrictions on where smoking or vaping is permitted.
A Customer or individual work location may also have rules that are more restrictive than state or local requirements.
Always follow the rules posted or provided at the location where you are working.
What About Smoking or Vaping Outside?
Do not assume that smoking or vaping is permitted simply because you are outside.
Customers may have designated smoking areas or prohibit smoking and vaping in certain areas of their property.
If you are unsure where smoking or vaping is permitted, ask the manager or Customer before stepping away.
What If I Need to Take a Smoking Break?
If you need to step away during your task:
- Follow the break requirements listed for your task.
- Communicate with the manager or Customer before stepping away.
- Ask where the designated smoking area is located.
- Return from your break on time.
You are still responsible for following any scheduled paid or unpaid break times associated with your task.
Do not leave your work area without communicating with the Customer when you are expected to remain available or when doing so would interfere with completing your assigned work.
Personal Hygiene and Being Ready to Work
Taskers are expected to arrive at a task and return from breaks with appropriate personal hygiene and ready to work in a professional manner.
You should not arrive at a Customer location or return from a break with a strong or noticeable odor from smoking tobacco, vaping, or any other smoked or inhaled substance on your clothing, hair, or body.
This is especially important when working around Customers, employees, food, merchandise, or the public.
You must also be fit and able to safely perform your task. Do not report to a task or return from a break impaired by any substance that could affect your ability to safely or appropriately complete the work.
If a Customer has concerns about your hygiene, noticeable odors, behavior, or ability to safely perform the task, you may be asked to leave the location.
Follow the Rules of the Work Location
Each Customer and location may have different policies.
If a Customer or location prohibits smoking or vaping on the property, you must follow that policy while working on your task.
Failure to follow a location's smoking or vaping policy may result in the Customer asking you to stop the activity or leave the location.
📌 Remember: Smoking and vaping laws and policies are not the same everywhere. Follow all applicable state and local requirements and the rules of the specific Customer location where you are working. Arrive and return from breaks with proper hygiene and never work while impaired.
